What Is a Drug of Abuse Urine Test Dip Card?
A drug of abuse (DOA) urine test dip card is a rapid screening test made up of immunoassay test strips mounted side by side on a plastic card. Each strip — or panel — detects one drug group. When you dip the absorbent tips into urine, the sample travels up every strip at once and a coloured line forms, or doesn't, to show whether that drug is present above its cut-off level.
Because one card screens for several drugs together, dip cards are the most cost-effective way to run regular urine drug screening in workplaces, healthcare and treatment services, schools and at home. Unlike an integrated test cup, the urine is collected in a separate pot, which keeps the card compact and the price per test low.
Which Drug of Abuse Dip Card Do I Need?
Start with the drugs you need to detect. A 7-panel card covers the drug groups tested at UK police roadside checks; 10-panel cards add ketamine, buprenorphine and synthetic cannabinoids (Spice). Not sure? Take our drug test finder quiz.

Dip Cards vs Cups vs Strips vs Cassettes
All four formats use the same rapid test technology. The difference is how the urine reaches the test strip — and what that means for cost and handling.
| Format | How it works | Cost per test | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multi-panel dip card | Collect urine in a pot, dip the card's tips, lay flat and read each panel at 5 minutes | Lowest for multi-drug screening | Regular screening for several drugs at the best price |
| Integrated test cup | Collect and test in one sealed cup; most include temperature and adulteration checks | Higher | Workplace collections where you want less handling and a sealed sample |
| Single dip strip | One drug per strip, dipped straight into the sample | Lowest per test | Testing for one drug only, such as cannabis |
| Test cassette | A few drops of urine added to a sample well with a pipette | Low | Single-drug testing on a flat surface |
How to Use a Urine Drug Test Dip Card
-
Check the kit
Check the expiry date and let the sealed pouch reach room temperature before you open it.
-
Collect the sample
Collect fresh urine in a clean collection pot. If you're checking the temperature, do it straight away.
-
Remove the cap
Open the foil pouch and pull the cap off the bottom of the card to expose the absorbent tips.
-
Dip the card
Hold the tips in the urine for the time shown in the instructions (usually 10–15 seconds), keeping the level below the MAX line.
-
Recap and lay flat
Put the cap back on and lay the card on a clean, flat surface.
-
Read at 5 minutes
Read every panel at 5 minutes. Don't read after the time limit in the instructions, as results can change.
How to Read Your Dip Card Results
Read each panel separately. The C (control) line shows the test has worked; the T (test) line shows the result for that drug. More on reading drug test results.
-
Negative
A line at C and a line at T. Any T line, even a very faint one, means negative for that drug.
-
Non-negative
A line at C but no line at T. The drug may be present above the cut-off — confirm with a laboratory test before acting on it.
-
Invalid
No line at C. The test hasn't run properly — repeat it with a new dip card.
How Long Do Drugs Show Up on a Urine Dip Card?
| Drug | Cut-off | Typical detection window |
|---|---|---|
| Cannabis (THC) | 50 ng/mL | 1–5 days (up to 30 days with regular use) |
| Cocaine (incl. crack) | 300 ng/mL | 1–3 days |
| Amphetamine | 1000 ng/mL | 1–3 days |
| Methamphetamine & MDMA (ecstasy) | 1000 ng/mL | 1–3 days (up to 5 days) |
| Opiates (morphine, heroin) | 300 ng/mL | 1–3 days |
| Benzodiazepines | 300 ng/mL | 1–4 days (up to 30 days) |
| Methadone | 300 ng/mL | 1–8 days |
| Buprenorphine | 10 ng/mL | 1–6 days |
| Ketamine | 1000 ng/mL | 1–3 days |
| Synthetic cannabinoids (K2/Spice) | 50 ng/mL | 1–3 days |
Typical windows at the cut-offs of the ALLTEST 10 Panel DOA-1104/KET. Detection depends on the amount used, how often, metabolism and hydration, and ultra-sensitive cards with lower cut-offs can detect some drugs for longer. See full detection times and cut-off levels.

Drug of Abuse Urine Test Dip Card FAQs
What is a drug of abuse urine test dip card?
A drug of abuse (DOA) urine test dip card is a rapid screening test with one or more test strips, called panels, mounted on a card. You dip the tips into a collected urine sample and coloured lines show, in about 5 minutes, whether each drug group is present above its cut-off level. Multi-panel cards screen for several drugs at once; single-panel strips test for one.
How accurate are urine drug test dip cards?
Our ALLTEST and UKDrugTesting dip cards are CE marked, made in ISO-certified facilities and typically show 95–99% agreement with GC/MS laboratory testing, depending on the kit — the figure is on each product page. They are screening tests, so any non-negative result should be confirmed by a laboratory before decisions are made.
How long does a dip card take to give a result?
About 5 minutes. Read every panel at the time stated in the instructions and don't read the card after the time limit, as lines can change.
Which drugs can a urine dip card detect?
Depending on the card: cannabis (THC), cocaine, amphetamine, methamphetamine, MDMA (ecstasy), opiates, benzodiazepines, methadone, buprenorphine, ketamine, synthetic cannabinoids (K2/Spice), tramadol, barbiturates, tricyclic antidepressants, mephedrone and MDPV. Check each product for its exact panels and cut-off levels.
How many panels do I need?
For general workplace screening, a 7-panel card covering the UK roadside drug groups is a good starting point. Choose a 10-panel card to add ketamine, buprenorphine and Spice, or the 12-panel NPS pack to include legal highs such as mephedrone. Use the comparison table above or take our drug test finder quiz.
What's the difference between a dip card and a urine test cup?
A dip card is dipped into urine collected in a separate pot, which makes it smaller and cheaper per test. A cup collects and tests the sample in one sealed container, often with built-in temperature and adulteration checks, so there's less handling. See our urine test cups.
What does a faint line on a dip card mean?
Any visible line in the T (test) zone, however faint, means the result is negative for that drug. A non-negative result is when no T line appears at all. Read more about faint lines.
What should I do if a result is positive?
Treat it as a presumptive (non-negative) screening result. Before any workplace, clinical or legal decision, send the sample for laboratory GC/MS confirmation — our lab confirmation packs make this simple.
Can I use a urine dip card at home?
Yes. Dip cards are simple to use and read, come with full instructions and are sent in discreet packaging. Many parents choose a 5- or 10-panel card — see our home drug test kits.
How long do drugs stay detectable in urine?
Most drugs are detectable for 1–3 days, while cannabis and benzodiazepines can be detected for up to 30 days with regular use. It depends on the drug, dose, frequency of use, metabolism and the card's cut-off level. See our detection times guide.
How should I store drug test dip cards?
Keep them sealed in their foil pouches in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, and use them before the expiry date. Only open the pouch when you're ready to test.
Do you offer bulk, wholesale or NHS pricing?
Yes. Most dip cards come in packs of 5, 25, 100 and 500, with a lower price per test as you buy more. For larger orders, trade accounts and NHS purchase orders, send a wholesale enquiry or call 01263 731 168.
How quickly will my order arrive?
We aim to dispatch orders placed before 3pm, Monday to Friday, the same day. Royal Mail Tracked 24 delivery is free on orders over £50, and every order is sent in discreet packaging. See delivery options.
