There are several types of workplace drug testing
- A pre-employment drug test-this is where a prospective employee undergoes a drug test as part of the recruitment process. This may be done externally by a recruitment company, occupational health service or it may be done in house by the company itself.
- Random drug testing-this is where an employer randomly drug tests their employees.
- Post incident drug test-this type of drug test is performed when there has been an incident at work, and the manager or employer suspects that drugs or alcohol have been consumed.
- On suspicion drug test-this is where an employee appears to be either under the influence of drugs or alcohol while at work.
Workplace drug testing procedures
A comprehensive workplace drug testing procedure in the UK typically begins with informed consent—employees are notified about the test type and voluntarily agree to proceed. The next step often involves test administration, either on‑site using urine or saliva kits or via a breathalyser for alcohol. Negative results conclude the process swiftly, while any non‑negative (presumptive positive) findings require a second sample sent to a UKAS‑accredited laboratory for confirmatory testing. During this period, employees may be suspended pending final results, and confirmatory positives trigger a disciplinary review in line with company policy. Testing may occur at various points—pre‑employment, random, post‑incident, or for‑cause—and employers must ensure privacy, fairness, and legal compliance under UK laws such as the Health & Safety at Work Act, GDPR, and the Misuse of Drugs Act.
For clear guidelines and templates to help structure your company’s testing process, see the our UK Drug Testing step‑by‑step workplace drug and alcohol testing procedure: Workplace drug and alcohol testing procedure – UK Drug Testing.

Rapid onsite drug testing kits
These are workplace drug testing kits that an employer can use to quickly screen employees for drug use. Onsite workplace drug testing give immediate results, but they are screening drug tests and any non negatives ( ie positives), should always be confirmed with a laboratory GCMS drug test, if disciplinary action is to be taken:
Types of onsite workplace drug testing
- Urine drug testing kits (very popular, easy and can detect for up to 3-5 days after drugs have been used. The easiest drug tests to start with and excellent value for money. Best method for detecting Cannabis use)
- Oral fluid saliva drug testing kits (very popular-a little more tricky than urine drug testing. Shorter detection time for drugs only detecting drug use for up to 12-24 hours after use. Not easy to detect Cannabis or Methadone on saliva drug tests. More expensive than urine drug testing but still good value for money )
- Drug and alcohol testing kits (usually saliva based mouth swab drug test kits and very popular as screen for drugs and alcohol in one drug test)
- Alcohol testing kits-these are available as alcohol test strips or single use breathalyser kits, and they just screen for alcohol.
- Hair drug testing kits ( unusual in UK workplace drug testing. Long detection period (up to 3 months ) makes this unsuitable for workplace screening in most cases. More suited to court cases or criminal justice. Only a couple of drug can be tested for on an instant hair drug test kit. Most have to be sent to the lab which is expensive. More expensive than urine or saliva drug testing).
- Surface drug testing kits-these are used to check a powder or to screen a surface for drugs if you suspect drugs may be being used at work. Useful if you think powder drugs such as powder Cocaine are being taken at work.
- Fingerprint drug testing-this is one of the newer forms of workplace drug testing and currently this is limited to just a few drugs. Finger print drug tests are a more expensive option than urine and saliva for workplace drug testing in the UK. The prices may come down as the tests become more widely available.
- Laboratory workplace drug testing using UKAS accredited lab drug test packs are the gold standard when it comes to workplace drug testing. A fully accredited laboratory drug test should be used to confirm any non negative onsite workplace drug test results, and to assess the amount of drug that is present in the sample.
How common is drug use in the UK workforce?
Drug use in the UK has increased over the last 10 years. Recent surveys of the UK population conducted in England, Wales, and Scotland reported drug use rates of 9.4% in England and Wales, 12% in Scotland, and 5.9% in Northern Ireland.

We recommend testing for at least the following 5 drugs on your workplace drug test:

- Buprenorphine
- Tramadol
Also consider whether you wish to also test for alcohol
What is on a standard workplace panel drug test in the UK?
In the United Kingdom, standard workplace drug testing panels may vary depending on the organisation's policies and requirements. However, a commonly used standard is the 5-panel drug test. This test typically includes screening for the following drugs:
- Cannabis (THC): Marijuana and its metabolites.
- Cocaine: A stimulant drug.
- Amphetamines: Stimulant drugs, which may include substances like methamphetamine.
- Opiates: Including drugs like heroin, morphine, and codeine.
- Benzodiazepines: Medications that can have sedative effects, such as diazepam or temazepam.
However many UK employers are now opting for more extensive drug test panels for their workplace drug testing , usually 7 or 10 panel, and sometimes 12 or 13 panel including additional drugs such as MDMA (ecstasy), Ketamine, Tramadol or other substances depending on the demographic of their workforce and local drug use.
Do most companies in the UK use a 10 panel drug test?
In the UK, the 10 panel drug test is very popular but most companies do not routinely use a 10-panel drug test as standard. Drug testing in the workplace tends to be more targeted and often varies by industry. We are increasingly seeing UK companies opting for a 13 panel drug test for their workplace drug screening although recruitment drug testing will often opt for a 7 panel drug test.

UK Drug Testing recommended saliva drug test kits to start drug testing in the workplace
Again there is a lot of choice when it comes to saliva drug testing, so here are our current top three recommendations if you are new to drug testing in the workplace and would like to do saliva drug testing. These all screen for the 7 most common drugs in UK currently and are very quick, accurate and easy to use. Some of them also include a screen for alcohol.
These two are particular good choice of saliva drug testing kits for drivers and logistics. The first one contains a drug screen for alcohol.
- Workplace and Driver 7 Panel Saliva Drug Testing Kits
- 6 Panel Roadside Drugs Oral Fluid Drug Test Kit
If you would like a 10 panel drug test we have a saliva drug test that exactly matches the drug test combination in our bestselling workplace split key cup drug test the ALLTEST 10 Panel Workplace Split Key Cup Drug Test Kit DOA-1107-B1-TRAM/KET mentioned above. These two would make an excellent choice for workplace drug screening where you wish to use a combination of urine and saliva screening. combination.
If you would like the ultimate saliva drug test kit then have a look at the 13 panel saliva drug testing kit. This will screen for more drugs than any other oral fluid drug test kits currently available, and it covers the standard drugs, as well as many of the newer drugs that we encounter in drug testing. One word of caution it will require a larger saliva sample to run the 13 panel drug test than it would to run a 6 or 7 panel so if you are new to oral fluid drug screening then it may be best to start with a 6 panel.
UK Drug Testing policy for employees
A robust UK workplace drug testing policy helps employers promote a safe and healthy working environment by clearly defining expectations, consent procedures, drug testing methods, confidentiality safeguards, and consequences for policy breaches. The company policy typically outlines when and how drug and or alcohol testing may occur—whether pre‑employment, randomly, post‑incident, or on reasonable suspicion—and describes which substances will be screened for and how. It should also explain how results are handled, ensure employee privacy, and comply with UK employment and data‑protection laws. Finally, it’s essential to include support options, such as referrals to occupational health or drug‑and‑alcohol counselling services, for employees who test positive or seek help.

How long after drug use can drug tests detect substances?
Detection times vary by drug, frequency of use, and individual metabolism. Detection times also depend on the type of drug test used. As a general rule, most drugs can be detected for longer in urine than in saliva (oral fluid) Detection times vary from a few hours up to several days after use and in the case of cannabis THC this may be detected in urine much longer in some individuals.
How can employers ensure accurate and reliable workplace drug and alcohol testing?
To ensure workplace drug and alcohol testing is accurate and reliable, employers should follow these best practices:
- Use certified and quality-tested kits – Choose screening kits from reputable suppliers that meet UK standards and include clear instructions.
- Follow proper testing procedures – Collect samples according to manufacturer guidance, maintain chain of custody, and test in a controlled environment to prevent contamination.
- Train staff administering tests – Ensure anyone conducting tests understands procedures, confidentiality requirements, and how to handle results correctly.
- Confirm non-negative results – Any positive or inconclusive screening should be sent to a UKAS-accredited laboratory for confirmation before taking action.Implement a clear written policy – A documented workplace drug and alcohol policy ensures tests are conducted consistently, fairly, and legally.Maintain confidentiality and data protection – Handle all results securely and in line with UK GDPR to protect employee privacy.
Following these steps helps protect both employees and employers while maintaining trust and compliance.
What drug and alcohol testing methods are available for employers?
Employers can choose from several drug and alcohol screening tests depending on their workplace needs, safety requirements and policies:
- Urine drug tests: A widely used and cost-effective option that can detect a broad range of substances. Suitable for pre-employment screening, random testing and post-incident testing.
- Saliva (oral fluid) drug tests: A non-invasive test that is quick and easy to administer, often used to identify recent drug use. Ideal for on-site testing and safety-critical roles.
- Breath alcohol tests (breathalysers): Used to measure current alcohol impairment and provide immediate results. Commonly used for random, for-cause or post-incident testing.
- Laboratory confirmation testing: Any non-negative drug screening result should be confirmed by a UKAS-accredited laboratory before disciplinary or legal action is taken.
The most suitable test will depend on the nature of the role, industry regulations and your workplace drug and alcohol policy.
Is workplace drug and alcohol testing legal in the UK?
Yes. Workplace drug and alcohol testing is legal in the UK, provided you have informed, voluntary written consent from your employees before testing. You should operate testing fairly, consistently, and as part of a clear company drug and alcohol policy.
Does a positive result mean the person is definitely using drugs?
A positive screening result indicates the presence of one of the specified substances above threshold. However, for workplace or legal purposes, we recommend sending the sample to a UK-accredited laboratory for confirmation to rule out any potential false positives. You can buy a UKAS approved laboratory confirmation drug test pack here

Do I need a laboratory confirmation?
For workplace, legal, or disciplinary purposes, a laboratory confirmation drug test is always recommended following a positive drug screening result.
What is the shelf life of the test?

All of our full-priced drug test kits are supplied with a minimum of 12 months’ shelf life remaining when dispatched. If a product has a shorter shelf life than this, it will always be clearly stated on the product description before you buy, and the price will reflect this.
This ensures you can purchase from us with confidence, knowing your test kits will remain reliable for at least a year from the date of order, provided they are stored correctly.
How quickly will I get the results?
Results appear within 3–5 minutes. Do not read results after 10 minutes, as this may give an inaccurate outcome.
